It looks like Chris Brown is having his own “56 Nights” moment, albeit with more comfort than DJ Esco endured.
The “Loyal” singer is currently stuck in the Philippines, unable to leave the country. He tried to leave a few days ago, but according to TMZ his plane was stopped on the tarmac. It’s the result of a legal dispute that’s been in the works for months.
Brown was supposed to perform at a New Year’s Eve concert in Manila. According to the promoters, he collected his million-dollar fee and then never showed up. They want a refund on their deposit, and have successfully petitioned the government to keep Brown in the country until he gives in to their demands.
“He is still in the country,” Immigration bureau spokeswoman Elaine Tan told the AP , adding that Brown has not applied for the emigration clearance he needs to be allowed to leave the country.
Brown was in the country playing a show in Manila—he’s already had to cancel several dates in South Asia.
But he’s taking it all in stride. In an Instagram post, Breezy jokingly begs to be allowed to leave, and then performs a back flip.
“Please, please let us leave!” he says while kneeling down and praying.
He even asked for President Obama’s help, writing,
Brown has posted a couple of videos to Instagram to raise awareness of his plight, at least one of which has been deleted. Below is screen grabed from the video clip.
He has already had to cancel one tour date because of the holdup. His Hong Kong performance, scheduled for Wednesday night, was moved to Thursday; after it became clear he wouldn’t make that one either, it was postponed to an as-yet-unknown date.
He also canceled an upcoming date in Jakarta, Indonesia; though his representatives say that was due to the unrest in the country and not because he’s stuck in the Philippines. Brown tweeted about that Tuesday night, saying, ” #TeamBreezyJakarta due to safety concerns my show on July 25th will be rescheduled! Let’s keep spreading love around the world! #Pray4Peace ”
Iglesia ni Cristo, the group responsible for Brown being held in the country, is a powerful religious organization with strong ties to the local government.
Do you think they’re right to hold the “Loyal” singer while they work out their dispute?
